Grog Rum is the sirloin steak of spirits. It reminds me of blood and fat. Young people don't appreciate that drinking is not simply recreational - it is a philosophical exercise, a deliberate attempt to sidestep the more immediate, pressing concerns of existence. Its usefulness comes from our need to be anaesthetised. Any attempt to prohibit alcohol, or deny it to the needy, can be interpreted as the action of a mechanized state that has no understanding of how painful simple existence can actually become. Alcohol is the penultimate defence against the world. The last is suicide. [previous] |
