Jam Tomorrow The forthcoming postal strike seems to be based entirely on the postal workers' hatred of "treacle" and "jam tomorrow". Treacle is what they call the argument of the management. More generally it means an argument that proposes to be a perfect and reasonable solution. "I don't know what you mean by criticising me," says the Treacle. "I am sweet and nourishing. See how I curl round the spoon!" Jam tomorrow refers to the distrust of post-dated pay adjustment tied to performance and conditional on the implementation of new structures. What I would like to record here is my deep love for the word TREACLE and the phrase JAM TOMORROW. Whenever I see them in the rallying literature of the CWU, it brings a smile to my face. [previous] |
